FERNANDINA BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT ACCREDITATION

06/01/2023

The Fernandina Beach Police Department is currently eligible for re-accreditation. From July 25 through July 27, 2023, a team of assessors from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) will examine all aspects of the Fernandina Beach Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services. The Fernandina Beach Police Department must comply with approximately 260 standards in order to receive a re-accredited status. Many of the standards are issues that are critical to life, health, and safety.

Accredited agencies are reassessed every three years. If successful in this cycle, the Fernandina Beach Police Department will receive its 6th reaccreditation and Excelsior Recognition, having been initially accredited in 2005.   Excelsior Recognition is the highest level of achievement in Florida accreditation a criminal justice agency can receive.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency members and the general public are invited to offer comments to the assessment team.  If you would like to provide input to the team, you may contact the Florida Commission for Law Enforcement Accreditation at 1(800) 558-0218, or by email at flaccreditation@fdle.state.fl.us.

A copy of the standards is available by contacting the Fernandina Beach Police Department’s Accreditation Manager at (904) 310-3204 or at :

The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar agencies.  The assessors will review written materials; interview individuals; and conduct virtual inspections of the Fernandina Beach Police Department.  The CFA Assessment Team Leader Doug Robertson with the Wilton Manors Police Department.  Other team members are Burt Himmer with the Division of Investigative and Forensic Services and Kaylee Licata with the Punta Gorda Police Department.

Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to receive accredited status.  The Fernandina Beach Police Department’s accreditation is for 3 years.  Verification by the team that the Fernandina Beach Police Department meets the Commission’s standards is part of a voluntary process to gain or maintain accreditation, a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.
